When the keys are late, your things wait safely

Storage in transit means the mover holds your shipment in its own warehouse while the move is still open, on the same bill of lading, so nothing is handed off to a carrier you did not hire. Renting a unit yourself means you take delivery first, the move is closed out, and the second move into and out of that unit is yours to arrange and pay for. The trade off is access. A self storage unit lets you walk in whenever you like, and storage in transit does not, because your goods are packed in sealed vaults stacked in a bay.

It depends on the carrier tariff and on what is written on your estimate, so ask for the limit in writing before you sign. The part people miss is what happens when that limit is reached, because at that point a shipment can move onto a separate storage contract with different terms, including different liability terms. Ask what the boundary is and what changes when you cross it.

Ask, and get the answer in writing, because the liability level you chose attaches to the shipment under the bill of lading and you want to know whether it runs through the holding period or stops at the warehouse door. It matters more than it sounds. Released Value Protection is the level included at no extra charge and pays 60 cents per pound per article, which is close to nothing for electronics or instruments. Full Value Protection costs extra and covers repair, replacement or a cash settlement.

Sometimes, and it is a labour job rather than a favour. Your goods sit in numbered vaults, so pulling one item means locating the vault, unstacking it, opening it and resealing it, and that work is normally billed. If you already know you will need something in the middle of the hold, say so at the survey. We load it last and list it separately, which is far cheaper than digging for it later.

Holding is priced separately from the transportation and is usually charged by the month, so both should appear as lines on one written estimate rather than as a number quoted later over the phone. Ask which estimate type you are getting as well. A binding estimate fixes the price for the inventory listed, a non-binding estimate can change once the shipment is weighed, and a binding not-to-exceed estimate means you pay the lower of the estimate and the actual cost.

Call with the new date. Nothing has to be re-tendered, because the shipment never left our bill of lading, but the delivery still has to be rescheduled against crew and truck availability on your lane, so the date you want is not automatic. Expect the extra holding time to be charged at the same monthly rate that was quoted on your estimate.
